Sony DVD recorders lose Freeview access following firmware update

Sony has admitted a 'major technical problem' with its line of DVD recorders after a firmware update caused thousands of users to lose access to Freeview service.

The firmware 1.70 update, sent to Sony's HDX boxes on Friday, seems to be the culprit with users writing to the BBC and taking to Sony's online forums to complain.

Amid moans regarding the lack of an official response, Sony used its official Twitter page to acknowledge it was doing everything possible to find a fix.

"A major technical issue has been flagged to our dedicated team. We will update you asap," the company replied to users of the social network.

Blame Arqiva

Sony also acknowledged the fault on its official support forums, seemingly blaming Freeview owner and provider Arqiva for the problem, while offering workarounds for affected users.

A member of the support team wrote: "It appears something has changed in the way that these devices are receiving EPG data from Arqiva, the people who own and operate the Freeview standard for the UK.

"So we are already trying to understand what has happened and how this can be rectified, realising that a large number of people have been affected."

In an update on Sunday morning, Sony also claimed the problem has been resolved for some users.

"Many users are reporting that the issue has been resolved and their devices are now able to correctly re-tune and received correct EPG date. Please post back if you are still experiencing problems," the company wrote.

Are you still receiving problems? Let us know in the comments section below.

Israel's Netanyahu says peace talks will be tough

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that planned peace talks with the Palestinians will be tough and any agreement reached would have to be ratified in a national referendum.

Netanyahu appeared to be lowering expectations for the talks in his first on-camera remarks since U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's weekend announcement that negotiations would soon resume after a five-year hiatus. Netanyahu pledged to insist on Israel's security needs above all ? saying his main guiding principles will be to maintain a Jewish majority in Israel and avoid a future Palestinian state in the West Bank becoming an Iranian-backed "terror state."

"I am committed to two objectives that must guide the result ? if there will be a result. And if there will be a result, it will be put to a national referendum," he said at the start of his weekly Cabinet meeting. "It won't be easy. But we are entering the talks with integrity, honesty, and hope that this process is handled responsibly, seriously and to the point."

Hardliners have floating referendum proposals before, usually as an attempt to add an additional obstacle to any efforts to cede war-won territories as part of a future peace agreement.

After a round of intense shuttle diplomacy, Kerry announced on Friday that Israel and the Palestinians had agreed on a basis for returning to the peace process, which broke down in 2008. The two sides are to meet ? likely in the coming week ? to work out final details before actually resuming formal negotiations on the toughest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A statement from Netanyahu's office on Saturday described the talks as being in Israel's strategic interests.

Final status negotiations aim to reach a deal on the core issues of the conflict, including borders, the fate of Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees and security arrangements. While Netanyahu stressed Israel's security needs as a top priority, the Palestinians say they agreed to talks only after learning they would be based on Israel's pre-1967 borders.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had previously refused to negotiate with Israel so long as settlement construction continued in part of his hoped-for state. Israel has said it will release some Palestinian prisoners as a good will gesture, but there are few other official details to emerge about the framework of the talks.

Jamestown Community College Offers Summer Camp Options For Area Youth

The age demographic of students on the Jamestown Community College campus will see a sharp decrease over the summer.

This is because the college's Center for Continuing Education is offering several programs for area students from age 6 to 14 beginning Monday and concluding Aug. 15.

During the week ahead, JCC's Kids' College will be available to preregistered students between the ages of 8 and 12. The program offers two morning and two afternoon sessions of approximately 2 hours in length, and will provide "summer learning adventures" through a multitude of course offerings.

According to Grant Umberger, director of the continuing education center, Kids' College has been offered for more than a decade, and has been well-received by the community.

"The appealing thing about it is there's such a variety of courses," Umberger said. "(The courses offer) anything from arts and sciences to physical education, STEM and music. There's a lot of those components. They're hands-on activities, so the kids are engaged in actively participating and learning and having fun while doing it.

"From the parental aspect, the kids are excited but they have projects to take home; so there's something tangible to show the parents," he added. "And (the children) are supervised at all times. They're engaged in learning, and they're safe here, so parents don't need to worry about that."

The morning courses include: creepy crawly critters; morning glories; par fore the course; charmed; monster academy; snails, slugs, shells and slime; camp half blood; groom your room; keep it simple survival; grossology; artistic adventure; knights, kings and castles; initially yours, puppet pallooza; sticky creativity; ultimate games; treasures of the sea; and jam session.

Afternoon courses include: habitat heroes; get your groove on; crusin' the cultures; tied in knots; build a "bot"; pennies for pets; fear factor; junior art-chitects; become the next cake boss; treasure trackers; crime scene investigators; picture this; double dare; take a hike; delicious art; minute to win it; and music makers.

Umberger said 208 "campers" have registered for Kids' College this year, which tops its 180-200 average.

STEM CAMP

STEM camp will take place from July 29 through Aug. 1, and will feature five courses at different campus buildings. The courses include: the heART of science, how a "bot" it, charting your course, racecar renegades and town of terror. Each course will be held twice per day; 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

"(STEM camp) is for children ages 10-14, and this is the second year we've done this," Umberger said. "We piloted it last year, and it went very well. We've expanded the program by a couple of courses this year, and we're really excited about it. STEM is very important, with the Common Core (Learning Standards), and we want to get these kids engaged."

Umberger said the camp is situated to be in proximity with the beginning of the coming school year so the students will have the opportunity to carry freshly learned STEM concepts into the school year.

Registration for STEM camp was due by Friday.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS

While registration for Kids' College and STEM camp is closed, there is one program still accepting interested participants-Wee College.

Wee College is available for students ages 6 to 7, and will run in two separate segments over two weeks.

The first segment is entitled, "A Wee Bit O' Math and Science," and will run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. on Aug. 5-8. According to the program's registration form, students will spend time running races, making shapes with food, building castles and exploring the world.

The second segment is entitled, "A Wee Bit O' Fizz-Icks." Running from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. on Aug. 12-15, participants will have an opportunity to build Lego robots, hovercrafts, kites and water rockets-employing physics concepts to learn about how robots move, kites soar and rockets launch.

Umberger said Wee College is in its fourth year, having received an overwhelmingly positive response from students and their families. He said there are plans to expand it further in the coming years.

Parents wishing to register their children for Wee College's math and science and/or physics segments must do so by 4:30 p.m. Friday and Aug. 2, respectively. The fee for each segment is $98.

Both programs are hosted by the JCC Center for Continuing Education, and both offer scholarships for qualifying students. To learn more about JCC's summer programs, visit www.sunyjcc.edu/continuing-education/jamestown-center/kid-youth-programs.

Singer Randy Travis still in critical condition after surgery

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Grammy-winning country music singer Randy Travis is still in critical condition following emergency surgery earlier this week, after suffering a stroke in a Texas hospital, his spokesman said on Friday.

"Mr. Randy Travis has been under heavy sedation since he came out of surgery late Wednesday night, July 10th, and is resting comfortably. He is still in critical condition," Travis' publicist Kirt Webster said in a statement.

Travis, 54, underwent a procedure to relieve pressure on the brain at the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, located north of Dallas, on Wednesday. He had been admitted to hospital last week for a heart condition caused by a virus.

A six-time Grammy award winner known for hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses," Travis has received an outpouring of support from country music stars and his fans.

Webster said Travis' family continued to ask for prayers and support as he recovers.

Jeff Bezos to open Center for Innovation this fall, aims to inspire young would-be entrepreneurs

Bezos Center for Innovation to open this fall

What's an e-commerce tycoon to do after funding everything from nuclear fusion startups to commercial spaceflight ventures? Why, help develop a museum exhibit to inspire young folks and teach them about innovation, of course. After more than two years of development and $10 million from Jeff Bezos' own pockets, the Museum of History and Industry will open the doors to the Bezos Center for Innovation on October 12th. Not only does the center aim to help visitors learn about "the importance of innovation" through interactive exhibits, but it will toot Seattle's horn for being "the birthplace of so many trailblazing companies." If you can't make it to The Emerald City, we're sure Bezos has a few learning alternatives in mind.
