The age demographic of students on the Jamestown Community College campus will see a sharp decrease over the summer.
This is because the college's Center for Continuing Education is offering several programs for area students from age 6 to 14 beginning Monday and concluding Aug. 15.
During the week ahead, JCC's Kids' College will be available to preregistered students between the ages of 8 and 12. The program offers two morning and two afternoon sessions of approximately 2 hours in length, and will provide "summer learning adventures" through a multitude of course offerings.
According to Grant Umberger, director of the continuing education center, Kids' College has been offered for more than a decade, and has been well-received by the community.
"The appealing thing about it is there's such a variety of courses," Umberger said. "(The courses offer) anything from arts and sciences to physical education, STEM and music. There's a lot of those components. They're hands-on activities, so the kids are engaged in actively participating and learning and having fun while doing it.
"From the parental aspect, the kids are excited but they have projects to take home; so there's something tangible to show the parents," he added. "And (the children) are supervised at all times. They're engaged in learning, and they're safe here, so parents don't need to worry about that."
The morning courses include: creepy crawly critters; morning glories; par fore the course; charmed; monster academy; snails, slugs, shells and slime; camp half blood; groom your room; keep it simple survival; grossology; artistic adventure; knights, kings and castles; initially yours, puppet pallooza; sticky creativity; ultimate games; treasures of the sea; and jam session.
Afternoon courses include: habitat heroes; get your groove on; crusin' the cultures; tied in knots; build a "bot"; pennies for pets; fear factor; junior art-chitects; become the next cake boss; treasure trackers; crime scene investigators; picture this; double dare; take a hike; delicious art; minute to win it; and music makers.
Umberger said 208 "campers" have registered for Kids' College this year, which tops its 180-200 average.
STEM CAMP
STEM camp will take place from July 29 through Aug. 1, and will feature five courses at different campus buildings. The courses include: the heART of science, how a "bot" it, charting your course, racecar renegades and town of terror. Each course will be held twice per day; 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.
"(STEM camp) is for children ages 10-14, and this is the second year we've done this," Umberger said. "We piloted it last year, and it went very well. We've expanded the program by a couple of courses this year, and we're really excited about it. STEM is very important, with the Common Core (Learning Standards), and we want to get these kids engaged."
Umberger said the camp is situated to be in proximity with the beginning of the coming school year so the students will have the opportunity to carry freshly learned STEM concepts into the school year.
Registration for STEM camp was due by Friday.
OPEN FOR BUSINESS
While registration for Kids' College and STEM camp is closed, there is one program still accepting interested participants-Wee College.
Wee College is available for students ages 6 to 7, and will run in two separate segments over two weeks.
The first segment is entitled, "A Wee Bit O' Math and Science," and will run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. on Aug. 5-8. According to the program's registration form, students will spend time running races, making shapes with food, building castles and exploring the world.
The second segment is entitled, "A Wee Bit O' Fizz-Icks." Running from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. on Aug. 12-15, participants will have an opportunity to build Lego robots, hovercrafts, kites and water rockets-employing physics concepts to learn about how robots move, kites soar and rockets launch.
Umberger said Wee College is in its fourth year, having received an overwhelmingly positive response from students and their families. He said there are plans to expand it further in the coming years.
Parents wishing to register their children for Wee College's math and science and/or physics segments must do so by 4:30 p.m. Friday and Aug. 2, respectively. The fee for each segment is $98.
