Amid claims of electoral fraud, Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has won a seventh term in office, after winning 61 percent of the vote, against Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's 34 percent.

According to the BBC, Tsvangirai earlier said the elections for parliament and president were fraudulent and promised to take legal action.

He even said that his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) would no longer work with Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.

The two parties have been in a coalition since 2009, after the last election sparked widespread violence, the report said.

Former colonial power the UK said it had grave concerns about the conduct of the election, and urged a thorough investigation of all allegations of violations and the US state department also called for an investigation and said the results were not a credible expression of the will of the Zimbabwean people, the report added.

Mugabe has been president since 1987and became prime minister when Zimbabwe won independence from the UK in 1980. (ANI)

TAMPA ? Warren Sapp will not mosey into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He will crash through the gates, lumbering large, as always. Sapp's deep bass voice will resonate through the halls that include all the greats in the business of organized mayhem. That was Sapp's greatest skill set.

He crushed people for a living, bashing into backfields for 13 seasons as a tower of power for the Tampa Bay Bucs, and later with the Oakland Raiders. He collected a bunch of neat stuff along the way, besides the heads of quarterbacks. Sapp was a seven-time Pro Bowler, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1999, and a Super Bowl champion.

The resume demands that he receive the highest honor that can be bestowed on a professional football player in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday night. But this is unquestionably a team effort.

The kid from Plymouth, Fla., had a lot of help along the way: A single mom who worked four jobs to provide for her six children. A high school tutor who pushed him academically. A soft-spoken NFL head coach who found an unlikely ally in the boisterous big man.

They all nudged him in the right direction, providing a compass from Plymouth to Canton. Sapp took care of the rest.

"I get more pride from my people around me," he said recently, chatting with a group of reporters after a Bucs practice." I never thought of the Hall of Fame. I never dreamed of the Hall of Fame. I played the game for the love and respect of the people I played with and against."

Sapp will become only the second NFL Hall of Famer from Central Florida. David "Deacon" Jones, from Evans High School, became the original rowdy sack specialist after he was selected in the 14th round (186th overall) by the Los Angeles Rams out of Mississippi Vocational (now known as Mississippi Valley State).

Jones, who died in June of natural causes, was enshrined in 1980. Sapp comes in 33 years later, sharing a bond beyond the boisterous soundtrack.

Jones grew up as a black child Eatonville in the 1950s, reading from hand-me-down textbooks from the white kids in Maitland and Winter Park.

"It made me defy education,"' Jones once told me. "At that point, I saw no need to go any further. When I went further, it was because that was the only way for me to advance my career."

Sapp channeled a similar negative-drive-into -positive-energy vibe as a kid growing up in Plymouth, cooped up in a house on the corner of Monk Avenue and Barrett Drive. It was a ominous intersection, a dead end for children of poverty.

Sapp's mom, Annie Roberts, raised four sons and two daughters on her own after Warren's father left the family when Warren was a baby. Roberts paid the bills through a variety of jobs, from cleaning houses to working at a nursery.

The road in front of Sapp's home was eventually paved sometime around 1991, but Sapp has always stayed true to his working class roots.

"In every walk of my life I remember 26 Barrett Drive," he said. "I remember 3319 Barrett when they changed the number, but we still had a PO Box. No mailman is coming to my door, no air-conditioning, no cable, So that's the foundation in which I woke up every day. That's something that never leaves you."

Sapp would grow up to star at Apopka High, where he played tight end, linebacker and punter. Sapp had great hands, even made the Sentinel's Super-Senior team as a tight end for the 1990-91 season.

"He was a tremendous athlete," longtime high school sports guru Bill Buchalter said. "Whenever he was given a challenge, he was on it."

Sapp piqued the interest of a bunch of schools, but eventually the University of Miami and Florida State University emerged as his remaining options. He picked Miami, only having to retake the ACT in order to qualify academically.

He was blessed to have one of those compassionate safety nets, Janice Carlton, the wife of Apopka assistant football coach Wil Carlton, came to Sapp's home two or three times a week to tutor him, making sure he was academically fit to take his football skills to the next level.

"The U" and Sapp made a perfect fit. Sapp beefed up from 215 to 270 pounds, giving him enough muscle to move to defensive tackle. He won a bunch of awards as the nation's best defensive lineman in 1994, as Sapp raised his game ? and his fame ? with the high-decibel arrogance that defined Miami's program during its heydays.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A GOP lawmaker accused the Internal Revenue Service of obstructing congressional investigations into the agency's targeting of tea party groups, a charge the head of the IRS denied.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said the IRS has been slow in producing documents that are so thoroughly blacked out they are useless to investigators.

Issa said he plans to bypass IRS lawyers and will subpoena documents directly from the Treasury Department, which oversees the IRS.

"You are slow-rolling us," Issa told acting IRS head Danny Werfel in a heated exchange during a committee hearing Friday. "There are important facts to get out, and you are obstructing."

"That is not true," Werfel fired back.

Werfel said that by the end of the day Friday, the IRS will have given more than 16,000 pages of documents to Issa's committee and more than 70,000 pages to Congress as a whole. Werfel said documents are blacked out to protect confidential taxpayer information.

Issa's committee does not have legal authority to receive confidential taxpayer information. In Congress, that authority is reserved for the chairmen of the two tax-writing committees, House Ways and Means and Senate Finance, and their designated staff.

Werfel said the two tax-writing committees are receiving full documents. However, both the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee have also complained that the IRS is producing documents too slowly.

On Friday, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, released an interim report on the Senate Finance Committee's investigation. The report reaches no conclusions, but the two senators said in a joint statement, "The IRS needs to be more cooperative in providing us with the documents needed to fully carry out this investigation."

Baucus chairs the Finance Committee and Hatch is the panel's top Republican. They said the IRS has provided them with 21,100 pages of documents.

"I'll tell you one thing," Issa said, holding up a page that was completely blacked out. "As these pages, which are almost impossible to figure out where they came from, are gone through by the Ways and Means Committee, you'd better hope, you'd better really hope, that we don't find something there that clearly should not have been redacted, which we expect we will."

Werfel said some pages were completely redacted because they came from individual taxpayer files, which were requested by Congress.

The three congressional committees are investigating the IRS for improperly targeting tea party groups for additional scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status from 2010 to 2012.

The IRS acknowledged in May that agents working in a Cincinnati office had improperly singled out tea party groups for extra scrutiny. The IRS has since released documents suggesting that progressive groups may have been targeted, too.

Congressional investigations have so far shown that IRS supervisors in Washington ? including lawyers in the chief counsel's office ? oversaw the processing of tea party applications. But there has been no evidence that anyone outside the IRS directed the targeting or that agents were politically motivated.

More than 100 IRS employees are working to produce documents for Congress, including 70 lawyers who are reviewing documents full time, Werfel said.

In addition, 19 employees have been made available for interviews by congressional investigators, and IRS officials have appeared at 15 congressional hearings since the scandal broke, Werfel said.

President Barack Obama appointed Werfel to run the agency on a temporary basis in May after forcing acting Commissioner Steven Miller to resign.

On Thursday, Obama nominated John Koskinen, a retired corporate and government official with experience managing numerous organizations in crisis, to a five-year term as IRS commissioner. Koskinen's nomination is subject to Senate approval.

Forget about the growing number of cable stations, major television networks have a new competitor stealing viewers during prime-time viewing hours. It's Facebook.

According to a Bloomberg Business Week report, a Nielsen study found that Facebook now has more 18-to-24-year-olds online during prime-time hours than any of four major television networks.

According to the study, about 50 percent of users in that age group will access Facebook between 8 and 11 p.m. During daytime hours, Facebook generates an even larger audience among young users, the report said.

Facebook is expected to use the new data to promote its new TV-style online advertisements.

Microsoft has agreed to drop the name and says it will not challenge the ruling by Justice Sarah Asplin, originally made in late June, that some buyers could end up confused and that the Microsoft service name did infringe on two registered Sky trademarks.

BSkyB had offered a service in the U.K. called "Sky Store & Share," which was an online storage service available for customers to upload and share digital files and photos, and information about events and appointments. Though discontinued in December 2011, the judge found this very significant. She also noted that users having problems with SkyDrive had ended up calling BSkyB's helpline, mistakenly thinking it was behind the technology.

BSkyB has struck a deal with Microsoft, which means it can continue to use the SkyDrive moniker "for a reasonable period of time" so as to allow for an orderly transition to any new brand identity.

Apparently that's part of a wider, though confidential, set of agreements between the two firms, which press reports in London suggest include some kind of financial aspect. In a joint statement, the two firms said, "The settlement of this case reflects the desire of both companies to focus on joint projects to benefit their customers," suggesting they have put the spat firmly behind them.

"We're glad to have resolution of this naming dispute, and will continue to deliver the great service our hundreds of millions of customers expect, providing the best way to always have your files with you," added Microsoft.

The tech company said it will change the name of the service, although it didn't reveal a new name. Technically, the problem only exists within the European Union, according to the judgment. So Microsoft could still use the name outside that territory. But it seems more likely a fresh identity will be created.

Microsoft managers may be getting used to changing names after copyright claims, though, so that may not be such a problem for them: last year it was forced by European lawyers to drop the name "Metro" for its Windows 8 UI, after German firm Metro AG complained. It's now called the Modern UI.

How safe are your debit and credit cards?

Identity theft and fraud affect millions of Americans every year. And depending on how much thought you put into your personalized PIN, you could be at a greater risk than you realized.

So, what constitutes a safe PIN number? A new study from DataGenetics lists the top 10 most-used PINs. And because they are the most commonly used PIN numbers, they are by default the least safe PINs.

According to Forbes, the United States and Mexico are home to the greatest number of credit and debit card thefts around the globe. Forty two percent of Americans say they have suffered from some form of card fraud, a study from Aite Group and ACI Worldwide shows.

The Department of Justice says that about 10 percent of all Americans suffer from credit card fraud each year and another 7 percent have their debit cards hacked or stolen. More than $5.5 billion in theft is attributed to credit card fraud each year.

The DataGenetics study claims that credit and debit card thieves are able to successfully guess more than 25 percent of stolen card PINs within 20 attempts.

And no surprise: the worst PINs are those that are overly simple or sequenced, i.e. ?1234.?

WTOP notes that the best PIN numbers are those ?with no special significance.? And in the case of the study, DataGenetics said the least used PIN is ?8068.?

The Gateway DX4870-UB2B ($499.99 list) is a basic tower desktop PC that checks all the boxes on what you need from a new desktop, particularly if you already have a LCD display that you're carrying over. It's speedy for its segment, has capacious storage, will let your family keep many documents open simultaneously, and it's relatively inexpensive. Unlike the $300 bargain basement specials, the DX4870-UB2B comes with a modern Intel Core i3 processor, dual-band Wi-Fi, and lots of drive space. It's expandable, so it can grow with your family. It's not ground breaking, but it's a solid choice with a great bang for the buck, so it's our latest Editors' Choice for budget desktop PCs.

Design and Features
The DX4870-UB2B follows other Gateway desktops, looking almost identical to the last black tower Gateway DX4870-UB17 ($500). Like that model, the DX4870-UB2B comes in a tower chassis with black panels all around, including the plastic front panel and metal side panels. The system's tray-loading DVD burner is hidden, but two of the system's USB 2.0 ports, SD card reader, and audio jacks are exposed on the top front of the chassis. In the back, the system has four more USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, more audio jacks, and two connectors for the included WiFi antennas. It would have been nice if the front USB ports were USB 3.0 to accommodate USB hard drives instead of the slower USB 2.0.

The inside of the system is certainly expandable, with plenty of space to move around for future upgrades. The system has space for two additional drives: one optical 5.25-inch bay and one 3.5-inch hard drive bay. Theoretically, you could shoehorn another three to four 2.5-inch notebook class drives in the same space, provided you have the correct brackets to hold the drives. The motherboard has four free SATA ports to service these drives. The system also has two DIMM slots free, along with a slot for a PCIe 3.0 x16 graphics card and two additional PCIe 2.0 x1 expansion cards. One PCIe x1 slot is occupied by the included 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi card, which will serve most users well. This is an improvement over other budget systems like the Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 ($400) and Zotac Zbox ID83 Plus ($473), both of which don't support 5Ghz WiFi, only the more common and crowded 2.4GHz channels.

The last consideration you have to make for expandability is the system's 300W power supply. While sufficient for additional drives and minor expansion cards, 300W will be insufficient for a high-powered discrete graphics card with Nvidia's or AMD's highest end GPUs. You can of course swap out the included power supply, but most budget system buyers never open their chassis, even if they are tempted by the system's expandability. Bring a screwdriver if you dare, because you'll need it for the case door and the drive bays. At least the internal card slots are tool-less.

Like other Gateway systems, the DX4870-UB2B comes with quite a few pre-loaded applications and utilities. These include 7digital, Zinio, Kindle, eBay, Chacha, Netflix, NewsXpresso, Amazon, Tunein, Hulu Plus, Xbox Games, Cut The Rope, Stumbleupon, Skype, Merriam-Webster, Britannica, Spotify, Microsoft Office (ad), Norton Internet Security), and Wild Tangetn games. That's a lot of pre-loaded apps, and most if not all are available for free from Microsoft Windows Store. While you may want to spend a few moments uninstalling all these programs, fret not, since the system has a capacious 1TB hard drive with plenty of free space left. The DX4870-UB2B comes with a standard one-year warranty.

Performance
The system comes with a third-generation Intel Core i3-3240 processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory, Intel HD Graphics 2500 (integrated in the Core i3 processor), and a 1TB 5,400rpm SATA hard drive. All of these components mean the system is plenty fast on our benchmark tests, certainly faster than the Lenovo Q190 and the Zbox ID83 Plus. That said, there are systems in this price range that are faster, notably the Polywell Nano i3-Q7 ($595) which trades physical and storage space for SSD speed, and the Acer Aspire AT3-600-UR11 ($600), which has a discrete graphics card and slightly more powerful processor adding to its performance totals. Check the performance chart link to see the final numbers, but suffice to say the DX4870-UB2B has the performance to keep your family happy for the next five years or so.

The Gateway DX4870-UB2B is a great choice for the budget-minded PC buyer who wants to replace that old desktop, but still needs the traditional large screen, keyboard, and mouse of a PC. It's not anything flashy, but it's a great buy, and likely will last you another five years before you need to replace it, something that can't be said if you decide to go with a cheaper tablet or laptop. This mix of components (and the changing of the seasons) lets the DX4870-UB2B inherit the budget desktop Editors' Choice from the previous Gateway DX4870-UB17.

After close to 50 years in disarray, an iconic piece of restored "Star Trek" memorabilia is about to boldly go on display in its new home.

On Wednesday (July 31), Space Center Houston ? the visitor's center for NASA's Johnson Space Center in Texas ? will unveil the new permanent display for the Shuttlecraft Galileo, a life-size spaceship prop from the original 1960s "Star Trek" TV series.

The Galileo's restorer, "Star Trek" superfan Adam Schneider, thinks that the space center ? which is next to NASA's home base for Mission Control and the astronaut corps. ? is the ideal place for the shuttlecraft. [See Photos of the restored Shuttlecraft Galileo (Gallery)]

"If somebody told me when I was a little kid that I'd be donating a spaceship to NASA, I would have said that they were kidding," Schneider, whose restoration took about nine months, told SPACE.com. "How does it feel? It feels amazing. It almost feels like it's all downhill from here because this is such a high. It feels truly like a success."

The Galileo's road to Houston has been a long one. Before Schneider won it at auction in June 2012, the shuttlecraft was in shambles. Schneider and his wife Leslie employed the help of craftsman Hans Mikaitis and his team of ship restorers at Master Shipwrights in Atlantic Highlands, N.J. to help return the shuttlecraft to its former glory.

The finished 23 foot (7 meter) long Galileo was revealed for the first time in late June before a crowd of more than 350 "Star Trek" fans and friends of the restorers before being shipped via truck to Texas for tomorrow's opening.

"The life-size spaceship will be on permanent display inside the Zero-G Diner and will be one of the few exhibitions in the world where visitors can see iconic sci-fi history that influenced generations of innovators," officials from Space Center Houston wrote on the center's website.

Space Center Houston will host a public event in honor of the arrival of Galileo on Wednesday. A celebrity panel will discuss the influence of science fiction on space exploration and an astronaut will make a presentation.

According to the visitor's center, celebrity guests will include:

Don Marshall, Lt. Boma from the original 1967 "Galileo Seven" episode of "Star Trek"
Robert Picardo, the Doctor in "Star Trek: Voyager"
Sylvester McCoy, the seventh Doctor on "Doctor Who" and Radagast from "The Hobbit"
Jason Carter, Ranger Marcus Cole on "Babylon 5"
Adrienne Wilkinson, Jedi Maris Brood in "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed"
Marshall Teague, a supporting player in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager"
Tracy Scoggins, Captain Elizabeth Lockley from "Babylon 5"
Gil Gerard, Captain William Buck Rogers in "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century"

"Like any good project, when it ends you're a little regretful because the experience was positive," Schneider said. "We had fabulous people to work with. We had a fabulous experience in the 'Star Trek' community, so I think we're a little sad and regretful that it's over at one level. On another level, this is a permanent addition to the fan base, so to speak, and we're really very proud that it actually is going where it's going."

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? The driver of a Spanish train that derailed at high speed killing 79 people was provisionally charged Sunday with multiple cases of negligent homicide.

A court statement said investigative magistrate Luis Alaez released Francisco Jose Garzon Amo without bail.

The statement said Garzon must appear in court once a week and is forbidden to leave Spain without permission.

Garzon was not sent to jail or required to post bail because none of the parties involved felt there was a risk of him fleeing or attempting to destroy evidence, the statement said.

It said the train driver's license had also been withdrawn.

Garzon was questioned for almost two hours at the court in Santiago de Compostela, the northwestern town near where the accident occurred.

Garzon was driving the train carrying 218 passenger in eight cars that hurtled far over the 80-kph (50-mph) speed limit into a high-risk curve on Wednesday evening, tumbling off the tracks and slamming into a concrete wall, with some of the cars catching fire.

The Spanish rail agency has said the brakes should have been applied four kilometers (2.5 miles) before the train hit the curve.

However, a local resident who rushed to the scene of the accident said in an interview broadcast Sunday that minutes after the crash Garzon had told him he had been going fast and couldn't brake.

The resident, Evaristo Iglesias, said he and another person accompanied the blood-soaked Garzon to flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

"He told us that he wanted to die," Iglesias told Antena 3 television. "He said he had needed to brake but couldn't," Iglesias said. He added that Garzon said "he had been going fast."

In its report about the accident, Antena 3 television showed a photograph of Iglesias in a pink shirt and cap helping to carry the driver after the train accident. The station also aired television footage of Iglesias working beside the wrecked train to help other survivors.

In the interview, Iglesias recalled Garzon's words, "'I don't want to see this, I want to die,' that's what he said repeatedly," said Iglesias. "'I had to brake down to 80 and couldn't,'" Iglesias quoted the driver as saying.

Iglesias was among the survivors and witnesses who began to give evidence to police on Sunday.

Investigators must determine if Garzon failed to apply the brakes or whether it was a technical failure.

Spain's state-run train company has described him as an experienced driver who knew the route well.

On Sunday, the death toll from the train derailment rose to 79 when an injured passenger died at University Hospital in Santiago de Compostela, officials said. She was identified as American Myrta Fariza of Houston, her family said in a statement.

Fariza's friends and family had created a Facebook page while she was hospitalized titled "Hope for Myrta," where they collected donations and exchanged messages.

Officials said 70 people injured in the train accident remained hospitalized, 22 of them in critical condition.

Meanwhile, authorities said forensic experts have identified the last three bodies among the 79 dead.

Victims have been reported from Algeria, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, France, Italy, Mexico and the United States, but officials have not publicly identified each victim or his or her nationality.

Mourning continued throughout Spain, with Sunday church services being held in remembrance of the dead. A large funeral mass is planned for Monday afternoon in Santiago de Compostela, and the prime minister and members of the royal family are expected to attend.

The crash has cast a pall over the town, a Catholic pilgrimage site. Santiago officials had been preparing for the religious feast of St. James of Compostela, Spain's patron saint, the day after the crash but canceled it and turned a local sporting arena into a morgue.

It was Christmas break in 1987 and coaches had some rare time off, but O?Leary, a first-year defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, wanted to take a trip to New Jersey to watch a potential recruit play basketball. He convinced a reluctant Ralph Friedgen, his good friend and Yellow Jackets? offensive coordinator, to come along on the trip.

As the flight to New Jersey neared its destination that winter day, however, the pilot emerged from the cockpit and lifted up some floor boards. The crew could not tell if the landing gear was deploying.

The plane circled for some time to burn off fuel, and it flew by a Westchester airport so the tower could see if the landing gear was down. The two coaches sat next to each other in first class as flight attendants readied the aircraft for an emergency landing.

In the aisle seat, O?Leary turned to Friedgen. ?Good luck,? he said, before tucking his head between his legs.

Friedgen cursed at O?Leary. ?I shouldn?t even be on this trip,? he shouted, peppering in four-letter words.

Friedgen laughed when he recalled the nearly-disastrous trip. O?Leary had become one of his closest friends on the staff at Georgia Tech, one that could pull him on a Christmas-time flight that might never land safely.

O?Leary functioned in a different way as a coach, sometimes. Friedgen remembered a time when O?Leary approached him before a spring scrimmage and requested that the offense run a long pass play on the third play. O?Leary, the defensive coordinator, was having a disagreement with the defensive backs coach about a certain coverage.

?I got to prove a point to this guy,? O?Leary said.

The defense ran that coverage on the third play, and the long pass play was converted for a touchdown. O?Leary stared down the defensive backs coach, Friedgen recalled with a chuckle.

In 1989, after Georgia Tech opened the season 0-3, assistant coaches went out to recruit while Friedgen and O?Leary headed back to the office to figure out how to fix the situation. O?Leary broke down the offense for Friedgen.

?There are only two guys that can make a play,? O?Leary told Friedgen.

The next game, Friedgen looked specifically to get the ball to those two players. The Yellow Jackets beat Maryland that week, and would win seven of their final eight games and 18 of their next 20 en route to a national championship in 1990.

Those two players, Jerry Mays and Shawn Jones, would combine for 1,954 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns in 1989, with Jones passing for another 12 scores.

?It was really a lot of fun,? Friedgen said. ?The most fun I?ve ever had in coaching was coaching at Georgia Tech in those years.?

Oh, and that player from the nearly-disastrous recruiting trip? He signed to play for Georgia Tech, Friedgen noted, and lettered for two years.

The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, says talks between the two teams have ramped up recently, however they are termed as being ?preliminary at this point? with no offers presented as of yet.

As a Knicks fan personally, I am not sure how I feel about possibly landing West. At times he could contribute on the court, however at other times he was completely useless. Maybe we would be better off without him.

I'm lucky that my job lets me test out a bunch of different kinds of gadgets for free. At any given moment, I have at least one device running every major computing platform within arm's reach.

But whenever I want to spend my hard-earned cash on a new gizmo, it almost always comes from Apple. I have an iPhone 5, Apple TV, and a MacBook Air. I still think Apple makes the best stuff (they won't forever though, trust me), and that's why it gets my money.

I used to have an iPad (the third-generation model with the super-sharp Retina display), but I sold it last week.?I got a cool $400 for it, just $100 less than what I paid for it on launch day in March 2012. (Say whatever you want about Apple, but its products hold their value very well.)

Something changed this year though. For months, my iPad remained on my nightstand, untouched. The battery was dead, not from overuse, but from weeks of neglect while it was in sleep mode, which barely sips power. I didn't feel a need to recharge it.

It was a strange twist in my computing habits. When I first got my iPad, I found myself using it more than my MacBook. I would come home from work and use my iPad to catch up on news and Twitter. At night, I'd use it to stream Netflix in bed. I really only used my MacBook if I needed to do some work from home. It was essentially just a word processor to me.

So, what happened??

I started using my iPad less and less this year mostly because I started working a lot more when away from the office. For writers, an iPad isn't an ideal device to get things done, even with one of those cool keyboard accessories. I still need a full-fledged PC to do my job well, as I suspect people in many other professions do.

So I found myself spending much more time on my MacBook, and I realized I could still do a lot of things on it that I could do on my iPad, and then some. I could still catch up on the news, keep up with Twitter, and plow through my exhaustive Gmail inbox. Since the MacBook Air is so thin and light, it was just as easy for me to use on the couch or in bed like I used to with my iPad. It was like rediscovering an old beloved toy.

Before long, I only had two devices in my daily rotation: My iPhone (for checking email and Tweets when away from the computer and playing games or listening to podcasts on the subway), and my MacBook (for work and just about everything else). I realized my iPad was better off in someone else's hands and that someone else's $400 was better off in my checking account.

Yes, iPads and other tablets appear to be cannibalizing the traditional PC market. PC makers like HP, Dell, and to an extent, Apple, have all blamed the popularity of smartphones and tablets for the decline in PC sales. However, in most cases, if you need to get work done, an iPad or other tablet really doesn't cut it. They're great devices for browsing the web, light emailing, and playing games, but still don't offer the full suite of productivity a regular PC does.

That's a problem Microsoft is trying to solve with Windows 8 and devices like the Surface Pro, a tablet that can double as a regular laptop thanks to a handy snap-on keyboard accessory. Unfortunately, most Windows 8 devices don't do a great job at being both things. There are still far too many compromises in weight, thickness, battery life, and apps that manufacturers have to deal with when making these hybrid PCs. As a result, most Windows 8 hybrids are pretty mediocre right now.

Until someone figures out the perfect hybrid device, I don't see a need to carry around three different computing form factors. And iPhone and MacBook Air is the perfect combination for me.?

A pair of high-tech Army blimps is coming to the greater Washington, DC area, and soon they will be able to provide the military with surveillance powers that spans hundreds of millions of acres from North Carolina to Niagara Falls, Canada.

The airships are part of Raytheon?s Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System, or JLENS, and when all is said and done they?ll offer the United States military what the defense contractor calls ?an affordable elevated, persistent over-the-horizon sensor system? that relies on ?a powerful integrated radar system to detect, track and target a variety of threats.?

Raytheon has just wrapped up a six-week testing period in the state of Utah and is now sending its JLENS fleet to the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. Once there, the Army intends to get some hands-on experience that will eventually culminate in launching the pair of airships over Washington, DC.

Once above the nation?s capital, JLENS will allow the Army to see for 320 miles in any direction from 10,000 feet above the earth. The system can be set up to operate on its own for an entire month without requiring refueling, and offers the Pentagon surveillance capabilities that dwarf other options at a penny of the cost.

Its manufactures say JLENS ?enables commanders to defend against threats including hostile cruise missiles, low-flying manned and unmanned aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, large caliber rockets and moving surface vehicles such as boats, SCUD-launchers, automobiles and tanks.?

?Affordable defense from real world threats,? Raytheon touts the system on its website.

To provide that security, though, the Army will send its integrated pair of airships ? around 75 yards in length each ? high into the sky carrying ?powerful radars that can look deep into enemy territory.? First, however, the residents of the metropolitan Washington, DC area ? and those in around a dozen states stretching the mid-Atlantic into New England ? will be asked to ignore a pair of sophisticated spying machines.

?JLENS uses advanced sensor and networking technologies to provide 360-degree, wide-area surveillance and precision target tracking,? the Defense Department found in an unclassified audit of the system conducted in late 2011. But while that tracking is designed to go after enemy drones and spot other suspicious activity, it is also touted as being able to provide a good enough image of moving land targets ? or essentially anything. In a press release from February, Raytheon said the JLENS surveillance radar can ?simultaneously track hundreds of threats.?

Of course, the surveillance ship is only half of the JLENS program. That aircraft, one of the two tethered blimp-like vessles, is equipped with the appropriate lenses to wage sophisticated surveillance missions. Also included in the package is a separate ship equal in size that contains fire control radar that picks up data about incoming threats and then communicates with separate missile systems that can then wage attacks, or counter-attacks.

?We?re proving blimps can see more than just the 50-yard line,? JLENS program director Doug Burgess told Popular Science this week. ?We really feel like we?re at the point now ? development is complete ? and the system is ready to be deployed wherever it?s needed.?

According to PopSci, the JLENS already successfully completed two exercises in 2012 in which it guided a missile to shoot down other missiles ? one over sea, another over land.

But while the likelihood of having one of the airships shoot down an armed drone heading for the White House seems unlikely, it?s a precaution that the Army intends on being prepared for ? even at the widespread cost of losing privacy.

?When the government is conducting real-time aerial surveillance within the United States,? Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center told The Huffington Post, ?there are privacy issues that need to be addressed.?

Raytheon estimates the using the JLENS instead of traditional, fixed-wing surveillance aircraft, could bring the cost of operation down by as much as 700 percent.

Sabra Klein came to the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction this week armed with a message that might seem obvious to scientists who obsess over sex: men and women are different. But it is a fact often overlooked by health researchers, says Klein, an immunologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

Her research on influenza viruses in mice, presented at the meeting in Montreal, Canada, helps explain why women are more susceptible to death and disease from infectious pathogens ? and the reason is intimately linked with reproduction. ?She?s one of the people that really gets the bigger picture as far as why do we see these patterns,? says Marlene Zuk, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, in St. Paul.

Women generally suffer more severe flu symptoms than men, for example, despite the fact that they tend to have fewer viruses during an infection. To Klein, this suggests that women quickly mount a substantial immune-system attack to clear infections ? and suffer the consequences of the inflammatory responses that flood their systems. ?This is where females run into trouble,? Klein says.

Hormone replacement
She and her collaborators have found this disparity in mice infected with flu viruses. But when the researchers castrated the males and removed the ovaries from the females, the difference disappeared as the males became more sensitive to infection.

But testes are not simply protective. Klein found that giving the neutered females the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone actually protected them from disease.

For females, infections appear to throw these cycling sex hormones out of whack. They elongate the oestrus cycle in non-neutered female mice ? stretching the part of the cycle associated with the lowest amounts of oestrogen from 4-5 days to 8-9 days.

Researchers have long known that immunological cells have receptors for sex hormones, and that autoimmune disease strikes women more frequently than men. Nevertheless, Klein says that her work should have implications for current public-health practices.

Women, who are often less likely than men to get vaccinated against flu, should be encouraged to do so, she says. And researchers may want to examine whether hormone-replacement therapies and contraceptive drugs have unintended ? possibly positive ? effects on some types of infectious disease.

But most importantly, Klein says, medical studies should take sex differences into account. Many epidemiological studies do not break down results by sex, a practice that she has found can obscure crucial trends. And clinical trials have traditionally worked around the female oestrus cycle, because it can interfere with results.

To Zuk, Klein has provided a voice of reason here. ?Why is it viewed as interference when you have interaction with the endocrine system or some other aspect of the reproductive system?? she asks.

?The age-old answer we get is that funding is tight and if we?re going to compare sexes, we?ll have to double the groups,? says Klein. But on the basis of her work, she says, ?I don?t know that that?s actually true?.

Qualifications & Experience:

*Degree in Geophysics or Geology
*Previous relevant experience as a geoscientist with an E&P company
*Competent evaluator of geological and geophysical data
*Proficient/highly skilled in use of G&G technical Workstation/PC applications
*Ability to use PC applications
*High-level knowledge of Structural geology, salt tectonics, sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, with expertise or specialist status in some are

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc shares opened 28 percent higher on Thursday after the company reported a huge jump in mobile advertising revenue, and analysts pointed to further growth from new advertising on Instagram and 15-second videos.

While still short of their IPO price of $38, the shares hit $34 -- a price not seen since their second day of trading in May last year.

At least 16 brokerages raised their price targets by as much as $9 per share -- in sharp contrast to a string of earlier downgrades amid fears it would struggle to make money from mobile advertising.

Revenue from smartphones and tablets made up almost half of total advertising revenue in the second quarter.

"FB's massive audience should be irresistible to brand advertisers as the company preps to launch 15-second video ads, which could be Facebook's next billion-dollar business," analysts at Jefferies & Co wrote in a note.

Instagram, Facebook's photo site with 130 million users, also looks ripe for the introduction of advertising and could be one of Facebook's biggest revenue drivers, the brokerage said.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley expect video ads to boost ad revenue by over 10 percent. Facebook is widely expected to launch the service in the fourth quarter.

At least 11 brokerages, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, RBC Capital Markets and Cantor Fitzgerald's have a target price at or above Facebook's IPO price of $38, a level the stock has never reached since its first day of trading in May last year.

INVESTORS HIT "LIKE"

The company has scrambled to address one of the main concerns weighing on the stock since its IPO, by developing mobile ads better suited to small smartphone screens that users increasingly use to access the service.

A year ago it had almost no mobile advertising. In the second quarter this made up 41 percent of total advertising, jumping from 30 percent in the first quarter.

Total revenue jumped by half from a year earlier.

"Facebook has discovered the formula to begin significantly extracting value from its 1.16 billion global users," said JMP Securities analyst Ronald Josey.

He raised his rating on the stock to "market outperform" from "market perform" and said the company was increasingly becoming a "must buy" for advertisers.

Evercore Partners and BTIG Research also raised their ratings on the stock.

GOOGLE LAGS

The quarter's results shows Facebook's massive market share gains from every internet company, including Google, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan said.

As growing numbers of consumers take to their smartphones to access the Web, internet companies have struggled with the challenge of displaying ads on the smaller screens.

Last week, Google Inc reported second-quarter results short of Wall Street's estimates as weakening prices for its ads weighed on the bottom line.

While Susquehanna had expected Facebook's superior mobile ads display platform to attract advertising dollars away from the competition, the brokerage said it was surprised by the strength of growth.

"The Facebook versus Google debate will return to the investment community, after a year-long hiatus," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan said.
