Pitt interim coach Keith Patterson has been named the defensive coordinator at Arkansas State, the Red Wolves announced Wednesday.
Patterson added the interim tag to his defensive coordinator duties with the Panthers after Todd Graham abruptly left the team last month to pursue the job at Arizona State, where he was hired shortly thereafter. Patterson was in his first season at Pitt and will coach the team in its BBVA Compass Bowl game vs. SMU on Saturday before joining the Red Wolves.
Patterson has a shared history with Malzahn. The two coached together at Tulsa in 2007 and 2008 under Graham.
"I am excited to bring coach Patterson on board and we welcome him to our Arkansas State family," Malzahn said in a news release. "We are getting one of the nation's top tier defensive coordinators and one of the top defensive minds in college football."
Malzahn, who was Auburn?s offensive coordinator the past three seasons, left that job to take the Arkansas State head coaching position, which opened when Hugh Freeze left to coach Ole Miss.
