Smartphone shipments in India up 167% in Q1

BANGALORE: Nearly 10 million smartphones were shipped within India during the first three months of 2013, a 167% increase from last year, aided by new launches from Samsung Electronics and cheaper devices flooding the market, according to latest data from market research firm CyberMedia Research.

South Korea-based Samsung Electronics, which has most of its phones based on Google's Android software, sold some 4 million smartphones during this period and retained market leadership with 40% market share.

Homegrown companies Micromax and Karbonn, which operate within the Rs 7000 to Rs 16,000 price point, saw smartphone shipments grow 19% and 8% respectively from a year ago.

CyberMedia said the triple-digit growth rate is a sign that increasing number of mobile phone users are migrating from feature phones to smartphones that can browse internet and download content.

"A significant proportion of these (users) were already using the devices of local vendors and preferred to continue with a smartphone of the same brand. Thus, local vendors have been able to introduce their new smartphone offerings to this 'captive' customer base," Tarun Pathak, a CyberMedia analyst said.

With smartphones available in various price ranges, India's mobile phone market has become increasingly competitive over the past few months. Smartphones makeup for 12-13% of overall phone market, up from 5% a couple of years ago.

Pathak said he expects local vendors to continue their dominance over the coming months aided by promotional offers and financing plans.

"It is expected to sustain, till such time as one of the Tier I international players like Nokia, BlackBerry, HTC or Sony launch a sustained marketing and promotion drive to regain share or introduce a new, potentially disruptive mobile device technology," he added.

The overall mobile phone market in India, of which feature phones are a part, grew 11% compared to the same period last year. A total of 74 million mobile handsets were sold within India during this period.

Obama grateful to first responders at jet crash

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is expressing his gratitude to the first responders at the scene of the airliner crash in San Francisco.

An Asiana Airlines flight from South Korea crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday. Authorities are trying to determine how many have died and how many have been injured in the crash.

The White House says in a statement that Obama has directed his team to stay in constant contact with federal, state and local partners as they investigate and respond to the accident.

The White House says the president's thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected by the crash.

Kentucky Child Care Subsidy Cuts Will Cost Jobs, Options in Louisville

Richard Morris owns a dozen child care centers around Louisville.

He expects he'll have to eventually close them all because of recently enacted cuts to a Kentucky financial assistance program for low-income families to cover child care costs.

The cuts may gradually cost more than a thousand day care workers their jobs in Louisville and force many day care centers to close, advocates warn.

"Folks who don't depend on CCAP are very likely to see the quality of their programs go down and they're likely to see the fees that are being charged go up." - Susan Vessels

?It?s going to be devastating to our business," Morris said. "Not only mine, but all the types of centers that cater to these low-income folks that provide what these kids actually need.?

Because of an $86-million dollar budget shortfall, the state changed the eligibility requirements for the Child Care Assistance Program. In the past, a family of four qualified with a monthly income of less than $2,794. Now, the same family can't make more than $1,863 per month to qualify.

Parents are likely to quit jobs or have family members or others care for their children.

That means a loss of business for child care centers.

'It's Like a Slow Death'

Morris has been in the child care business for more than 20 years.

He has about 200 employees that care for about 1,700 children. For now.

The parents qualified for CCAP before the changes but don't now won't be dropped from the program until their contracts?usually year-long?run out. Once that hits, Morris expects his business to gradually drop at all 12 day cares. Eventually, the situation will become untenable.

?It?s like a slow death," Morris said. "I hate to say it that way, but what will happen is moms and dads go back to renew these contracts and they can?t be on the program, we don?t have that family of two or three. If that happens once or twice with two or three, there goes an employee. The number of employees that we have is the amount of children that we have.?

Ripple Effect?

Even if parents have never gotten the CCAP?subsidy, they may still see the effects of the cuts,??said Susan Vessels, executive director of the Louisville advocacy group Community Coordinated Child Care.

Most Louisville child care centers accept CCAP payments. Even if they don't risk closing, the child care centers will likely have to cut staff and program offerings if they lose enough business, she said.

?Folks who don?t depend on CCAP are very likely to see the quality of their programs go down and they?re likely to see the fees that are being charged go up," Vessels said. "So this is kind of a lose-lose-lose for everyone.?

The cuts will eventually cause 1,200 of Louisville's 4,000 child care workers to lose their jobs, Vessels estimates.

Statewide, 2,442 child care centers are expected to lose revenue because of the CCAP cuts, according to the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services, which administers the program and oversees child care regulation.

The state is likewise concerned that the cuts will harm the child care industry, said?Theresa James, commissioner for the Department for Community Based Services.

But, she noted in a recent interview with WFPL, the cuts were unavoidable because of the department's budget shortfall.

Morris said he'll try to keep his day care open as long as it's feasible.

Child care centers don't have a large profit margin, however, and he depends on volume to keep his operating, he said.

?We?ll be trying to just fend anyway we can just trying to survive," Morris said, noting that smaller day care providers will struggle even worse. "And we?ll do that as long as we can, but when the day comes when we?re spending more money than we?re taking in, it?s very simple?you close your doors.?

Android this week: Moto X details leaked; end of HTC One S updates; HP Slate 7 price cut

The wait for the elusive Moto X handset shouldn?t last much longer. This week, Motorola ran full-page newspaper ads explaining how the device is made in the U.S. and is the first phone you can design yourself. The former is certainly true ? the handsets will be produced in a old Nokia?plant based in Texas ? but the jury is still out on the latter point.

Leaked information indicates that the ?user design? aspect is relatively limited and not all that innovative. It?s expected that the Moto X color can be customized with up to 16 difference back cover choices. Motorola will reportedly engrave the phone if a buyer chooses the option and if a digital photo is provided, Motorola will install it as a custom wallpaper on the Moto X.

If correct, these user design choices leave a little bit to be desired: It?s not likely that droves of consumers will flock to the Moto X for these over their current smartphone. All accounts still indicate the handset to be a mid-range device when compared to the latest flagship phones as well: A 720p display with dual-core processor, for example. It?s highly likely the phone will make better use of its internal sensors than other phones, however, as the company has already indicated this feature set.

With those specifications, the Moto X is farily similar to a phone from 2012: The HTC One S. There?s a key difference, however. Motorola is expected to keep updating the software on the Moto X; HTC One S owners have no such luck. This week, HTC officially announced that the phone, with debuted in late April, 2012, won?t see any official software updates. The handset currently runs Android 4.1, so it?s capable of running most Android apps but this sets a bad precedent for the company and for Android as a whole.

While there are never any guarantees of updates when purchasing a handset, it?s a reasonable expectation that the phone will get them for a certain period of time. In fact, Google publicly announced with some of its partners in 2011 (including HTC) that all Android handsets would get software updates for at least 18 months after phone launches. That promise now holds no water and I hope that Google works with HTC to bring at least Android 4.2 to the One S.

Consumers that held off on buying an Android-based tablet could save themselves $30 this week: HP has reduced the Slate 7 cost from $169 to $139. That?s not a bad price for a 7-inch tablet, but I think it?s a bad price for this particular 7-inch tablet.

For $10 more, the HiSense Sero 7 Pro offers a better value with higher resolution display, increased battery life, a more powerful processor and higher resolution camera. There?s certainly a market for both devices, but before jumping on the $30 savings for a Slate 7, I recommend looking around for similar devices in this price range.
