Oil prices fall as dollar rally

NEW YORK, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Oil prices retreated Friday as the U.S. dollar surged to a four-year high against the yen.

The U.S. dollar rallied broadly as recent data showed the job market is improving. The number of Americans initially applying for unemployment aid fell to a five-year low last week. In April, the U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 7.5 percent.

The U.S. dollar traded above 100 Japanese yen for the first time since April 2009. The Dollar Index, which tracks the U.S. dollar against other six major currencies, rose as much as 0.8 percent.

The U.S. dollar appreciation triggered a sell-off in oil, as a strong greenback will dampen the demand for dollar-denominated oil and make it less attractive to holders of other currencies.

The rising output also weighed on the oil prices. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries produced 30.46 million barrels a day last month, up from 30.18 million in March, said the group's Monthly Oil Market Report.

The U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the U. S. economy has not yet fully regained jobs lost in the recession triggered by the financial meltdown in 2008 and the U.S. financial system still struggles with consequences of the crisis. He made the remarks at a Chicago Fed conference right after Friday's opening bell.

Light, sweet crude for June delivery lost 35 cents, or 0.36 percent, to settle at 96.04 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Brent for June delivery went down 56 cents, or 0.54 percent, to close at 103.91 dollars a barrel.

Jury resumes deliberating fate of Philadelphia abortion doctor

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A Philadelphia jury began its fifth day of deliberations on Monday in the murder trial of a doctor accused of killing babies and a patient during late-term abortions at a clinic serving low-income women.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, who ran the now-shuttered Women's Medical Society Clinic, could face the death penalty if convicted by the jury in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia.

The seven-woman, five-man jury heard five weeks of testimony before starting deliberations last Tuesday. After having the weekend off, the panel reconvened at about 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

Gosnell is charged with four counts of first-degree murder for delivering live babies during late-term abortions and then deliberately severing their spinal cords, prosecutors said.

It is legal in Pennsylvania to abort a fetus up to 24 weeks into a pregnancy. Gosnell also faces charges that he performed 24 abortions beyond 24 weeks.

Judge Jeffrey Minehart told jurors last week that state law defines a live baby as one that is fully expelled from the mother and showing signs of life such as breathing, heart beat or movement.

Gosnell's defense contends there is no evidence the babies were alive after they were aborted.

Testimony depicted a filthy clinic serving mostly low-income women in a largely black community.

Gosnell also is charged with murdering Karnamaya Mongar, 41, of Virginia, who died from a drug overdose after going to him for an abortion, prosecutors said.

Gosnell has been in jail since his January 2011 arrest. Eight other defendants have pleaded guilty to a variety of charges and are awaiting sentencing. They include Gosnell's wife, Pearl, a cosmetologist who helped perform abortions.

Heritage recipe albums are a priceless treasure. Food often has strong ties to our emotions and memories. Certain foods may remind us of Thanksgiving at Grandma's, or goody baskets received at Christmas time. Most of us associate certain foods with particular events, people or traditions. Foods that remind us of home or family are often a comfort.

Many of us have family recipes that have been passed down for generations. Memories and stories are often lost from one generation to the next. Recipe scrapbooks not only preserve the recipe itself, but also the tips and heart-felt stories that accompany them.

Gathering Recipes
Gathering the recipes and memories from family members is the biggest task in creating a heritage recipe album. Send out a letter or email asking them for several of their favorite family recipes. Have them include thoughts and memories about each recipe.

Include a list of questions to get the information you would like for each recipe. You may want to note that the person shouldn't feel obligated to answer every question for each recipe. Hopefully some will spark some great memories. Ask them to include a photo of an occasion where that recipe was served. Here are some possible questions:

Whose recipe is this?
Who in your family makes this most often, or is most strongly associated with this recipe?
Where did the recipe come from?
Whose favorite recipe is this and why?
Are there any memorable stories associated with this recipe?
Are there any special tips or suggestions in preparing this recipe?
Is there a special secret ingredient for this recipe?
Is there a certain time of year your family enjoys this recipe?
Was this recipe served at a memorable occasion or event?

Scrapbook Layout Suggestions
Now that you have gathered all your recipes and information, it's time to start the album. Here are a few things to consider before you start laying out pages.
Choose your album size and type
Make a list of recipe categories you want to include
Divide the recipes into the proper categories
Choose a color, pattern or some way to distinguish each category
You are ready to begin your recipe album. Some suggested pages may include:

Title page - This may include the name of the family the recipes are from.
Dedication page - This is a great place to describe the person or family and why the album was created.
Table of contents - List each category of food included in the book, ei:Entrees, side dishes, salads and desserts.
Subtitle page - List each recipe included in that category.
Recipe page - For larger albums (12 X 12) a single page per recipe may work. For smaller albums (8 X 8) a two page spread may work better.
Use photo corners to attach recipe card
Include a photo of people or event where recipe was served
Include information from questions sent out

Scrapbooking recipes is a fun creative way to preserve many treasured family traditions. A digital album is a great option that would allow those traditions to be shared with everyone in the family.

Julianna Margulies and Paul Rudd to join onstage

NEW YORK (AP) ? Julianna Margulies and Paul Rudd will team up as lovers for a one-night only benefit reading of Neil LaBute's play "The Mercy Seat."

The off-Broadway company MCC Theater said Thursday the reading will be held June 17 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Tickets are available from $75-$250 and go on sale to the general public May 7.

"The Mercy Seat" is set on the day after the 9/11 attacks in which a World Trade Center worker contemplates using the tragedy to run away and start a new life with his lover.

Margulies, the star of "The Good Wife," last appeared on an MCC stage in 2002's "Intrigue with Faye." Rudd, of "Anchorman" fame, was on Broadway this season in "Grace."

The event celebrates MCC's collaboration with LaBute, who has had seven plays produced there over the last decade, including this spring's "Reasons to Be Happy."

Access to the web site of the Southern Baptist Convention has been blocked on US military bases, because of an official judgment that the site carries "hostile content," Fox News has reported.

It was not clear how many military bases had blocked the Southern Baptist site. A member of the military reported that he had been unable to reach the site, and had been warned that his attempt to access material from the Southern Baptist Convention had been recorded.

The Southern Baptist Convention represents the largest single Protestant group in the US, and generally takes conservative positions on issues such as homosexuality and abortion.

The report of blocking of the Southern Baptist site comes shortly after a report that a Pentagon official had classified Catholicism as a form of extremism.
