Food fight or romantic dinner? Communication between couples is key to improving men's diets

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? Married men will eat their peas to keep the peace, but many aren't happy about it, and may even binge on unhealthy foods away from home.

"The key to married men adopting a healthier diet is for couples to discuss and negotiate the new, healthier menu changes as a team," said Derek Griffith, assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

This seems obvious, but most times it doesn't happen, according to a new study called "'She looks out for the meals, period.' African-American men's perceptions of how their wives influence their eating behavior and dietary health."

Researchers conducted focus groups with 83 African-American men. The majority of men said their wives didn't consult them when helping them to adopt a healthier diet. Even though the healthier diet was often ordered by a physician, the husbands often disliked the food changes, but to avoid conflict, they didn't object. Men focused more on maintaining a happy home than having a say in what they ate.

In fact, the only examples found of couples negotiating healthy food choices came about to benefit the children in the home, Griffith said.

However, without that communication, those good intentions and healthy diet changes often backfired, the study found. After tasteless ground turkey for the fifth night in a row, some men would head to the all-you-can-eat buffet for "a landslide of food."

"I think at dinner a lot of men are eating healthier, but they compensate for the dissatisfaction of not eating what they want by making unhealthier choices outside the home," Griffith said.

Physicians can help by recognizing that wives play a central role in what men eat at home, Griffith said.

"Doctors could suggest that men have a tactful conversation with their wives in a way that ensures the husbands aren't sleeping on the couch that night," Griffith said.

That 'Minority Report' interface? It's now only $70 away

44 min.

If you've ever watched "Minority Report" and wished that you could interact with your computer just by waving your hands around, then you might want to take a look at the Leap. It's a tiny little gadget which will supposedly allow you to control your devices by waving your hands, wiggling your fingers, or fidgeting with a pen.

Of course there's plenty of 3-D?motion-control technology out there already ??the Kinect comes to mind, for example?? but the Leap will still blow your mind. (If you think I'm?exaggerating, just watch the video below and tell me that you didn't get at least a bit excited.)

Made by Leap Motion, a motion-control software and hardware company, the Leap is marketed as "the world's most accurate 3-D motion control device." It is supposedly 200 times more sensitive than existing technologies, can detect motion within a space of four cubic feet, is accurate to within 1/100th of a millimeter, and can detect all ten of your fingers (as well as objects such as pens).

The Leap will connect to your computer via USB and calibrate in just one step. You will be able to fine-tune the device's sensitivity settings, create custom gestures, and even network multiple Leap devices together to create a larger interaction space.

"I believe?the Leap is the future of how people will interact with their devices,? says?Bill Warner, founder of Avid Technology and one of Leap Motion's investors, in a press release.??What's previously been an expensive special effect in movies is now an affordable everyday reality, in full 3-D. With the Leap, you use both hands and all 10 fingers?to work?within your computer's virtual environment just as easily as you do in the real world.?

The Leap will be priced at $69.99 and will ship this winter. It can be pre-ordered on the Leap Motion site right now. I will, of course, try to get my hands on one as soon as possible so that I can see if it really is as incredible as it looks in Leap Motion's demo?video.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? Taiwan's president began his second term Sunday and signaled he will maintain a China policy that has reduced tensions between the sides, offering Beijing little early hope of realizing its long-term goal of unification.

Speaking at a low-key inaugural ceremony in Taipei's ornate presidential office building, Ma Ying-jeou hewed to the same formula for relations across the 160-kilometer-wide (100-mile-wide) Taiwan Strait he championed during his first term.

"Our cross-strait policy must maintain the status quo of 'no unification, no independence and no use of force,'" Ma said.

He reaffirmed his support for the so-called 1992 Consensus, an informal agreement reached by representatives of the sides accepting that there is only one China ? and not one China, and one Taiwan, which is the stance of many in Taiwan's pro-independence opposition. But Ma enunciated his position in a way apparently calculated to leave hard-liners in Beijing disappointed.

"When we speak of one China, naturally it is the Republic of China," he said.

The Republic of China is the exiled government that Nationalist icon Chiang Kai-shek brought with him to Taiwan in 1949, when Mao Zedong's Communist forces prevailed in the Chinese civil war.

Beijing sees it as a historical relic that lost its legitimacy when Mao proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China 63 years ago. Since then, Chinese leaders have always insisted that Taiwan must be brought under their control, by persuasion if possible, by force if necessary.

Ma won re-election in January largely by assuring voters that he would safeguard their hard-won democratic freedoms, while simultaneously moving forward with his signature policy of tying Taiwan's high-tech economy ever closer to China's lucrative markets. That formula has helped to lower cross-strait tensions to their lowest level in six decades.

His remarks on Sunday ? reaffirming his opposition to unification and his fealty to the Republic of China ? make it clear that he still supports that path.

Despite Ma's relatively comfortable re-election victory ? he won by six percentage points ? he begins his second term under the shadow of deep-seated voter dissatisfaction with his overall performance. A particular focus is his economic policies, including a recent decision to raise utility rates.

Tens of thousands of anti-Ma protesters gathered in downtown Taipei on Saturday to demonstrate against those policies. Wearing red and green armbands emblazoned with the Chinese character for "anger," the demonstrators snaked their way through the streets of the capital before gathering in front of the presidential office building under a light drizzle.

Posted by Diana on May 19th, 2012 05:04 AM | Asthma??

Asthma is a inveterate lung disease that narrows and inflames the airways (the tubes that convey air in and out of the lungs). These blocked airways origin breathing difficulty resulting in wheezing, brevity of breath, coughing and chest tightness.

Asthma is basically divided in to two groups- allergic asthma and non- allergic asthma. The allergic asthma?s symptoms are usually triggered by an allergic rebound. This type of asthma is the most of the people one. The factors that trigger the allergic asthma symptoms are dust particle allergen, pet dander, mold, pollen, etc.
The non- allergic asthma is the smaller popular one. It is not associated with an allergic rebound, instead it is triggered by factors such as force, dry air, cold air, anxiety, exercise, smoke, hyperventilation, viruses or other irritants.

More interesting facts and statistics about asthma:

Guest post: Discovering feminism through surviving domestic ...

This is a brilliant guest post from DV Diary, whom you can also follow on twitter @dvdiary.

  1. How would you describe your feminism in one sentence? When did you become a feminist? Was it before or after you became a mother?

I became a committed feminist while studying domestic violence as part of a social work degree I did at the University of Sydney as a ?mature age? student. During this time I realised I was experiencing domestic violence, and had been for many years. My feminism is heavily influenced by the women?s domestic violence movement, and it led me to become a DV worker, once I had become safe myself. My feminism is informed by feminist theories of domestic violence as a gendered crime; a product of the patriarchy; a deliberate pattern of tactics used mostly by men against women to control them and keep them in fear. It is the belief that women and children have the right to equality, respect, freedom, safety and security. I came to feminism several years before becoming a mother. I have written a blog post about how I came to feminism.

  1. What has surprised you most about motherhood?

What has surprised me most about motherhood is the loss of feelings of self-worth derived from going to work and feeling like I am contributing, being productive and achieving something. I struggled with the reality of the intensity of mothering, and with getting very little else done, and with having nothing tangible to show for all my hard work. I struggled too with frightening postnatal depression and feelings of being a ?fraud? as a mother. This is all with a respectful, non-abusive, non-controlling, non-violent partner. I often admire how my clients manage to mother through domestic violence and I am thankful that I escaped it prior to becoming a mother, as DV usually involves a systematic undermining by the perpetrator of a mother?s bond with her children and of her confidence as a parent.

  1. How has your feminism changed over time??What is the impact of?motherhood?on your feminism?

My feminism underwent its most fundamental change several years ago when I was studying domestic violence and escaping it myself. Before that it was lacking in conviction and undermined by trauma. The impact of motherhood on my feminism is not yet clear. I am only a few months into my mothering journey. However, if anything, motherhood has made clearer to me the wider impact of gender inequality beyond the particular effects of domestic violence.

  1. What makes your mothering feminist? How does your approach?differ from a non-feminist mother?s? How does feminism impact upon your parenting?

I?m not sure I can yet answer the question of what makes my mothering feminist, but feminism impacts upon my mothering in that I am aware of the challenges I face in raising a child in a society that is so hostile and disrespectful of women, girls and mothers. I hope to raise a child who believes in social justice, gender equality, respectful relating and non-violence. Feminism impacts upon my mothering in that I treat my child with the respect he deserves as an individual; he is not my property, he is my responsibility to love and care for and then let go into the world. I hope he will reciprocate this respect. I don?t know how my approach differs from a non-feminist mother?s.

  1. Do you ever feel?compromised as a feminist mother? Do you ever feel you?ve failed as a feminist mother?

I have not yet had time to feel that I have failed as a feminist mother, as I am still learning what it means to be a feminist mother. It has only been through my recent thinking and reading that I am realising that I am a feminist mother. In another blog post of mine I write briefly of the guilt and trauma I felt for some time at not being able to birth my baby the way I would have liked, and at not being able to breastfeed him the way I wanted. But I am over this now, and I am focusing on building a loving and respectful relationship with my son.

  1. Has identifying as a feminist mother ever been difficult? Why?

This is the question I have struggled with most in this series. Any difficulties I have experienced in identifying as a feminist mother must be couched in terms of my white middle class privilege. But even with such privilege, identifying as a feminist mother so far is a tricky undertaking because most people are still suspicious of the idea. ?My partner and a few select friends are really the only ones who are aware of my views, apart from my colleagues at the domestic violence service where I work. Being a feminist mother entails different things to different people. Here are some examples where I believe I am embodying my version of feminist motherhood, and where I have been challenged:

  • at work, being asked if becoming a mother will change the way I view my clients (the inference being that these women are failing to protect their children from their violent fathers). If anything, becoming a mother has given me even more empathy for my clients with children who are safety planning around an abusive partner.
  • whilst pregnant, navigating the dominant discourse of the patriarchal biomedical establishment in order to achieve the kind of pregnancy and birth for my child and myself I was hoping for, i.e. safe but also with as little medical intervention as possible
  • the trauma experienced when this did not eventuate
  • mothering through residual trauma from domestic violence experienced in a previous relationship
  • fielding comments from clueless friends (both male and female) who think that being on maternity leave and caring for a baby is one big holiday
  • struggling with debates about pornography, censorship and violence against women
  • feeling powerless and hopeless in the face of the worldwide prevalence of violence against women, and wondering how so many in society can be either indifferent to it or misunderstand it
  • Again, I feel I will have more to write on this question as time goes on and I have more experience of being a feminist mother.
  1. Motherhood involves sacrifice, how do you reconcile that with being a feminist?

My feminism involves a belief that women and children have a right to respectful relationships, safety, equality, freedom and security. I feel this approach is congruent with the sacrifices of motherhood, especially because I am privileged to have become a mother through choice and in a safe and respectful environment. I do struggle with how to balance motherhood with my desire for learning, reading, writing and activism, and when I return to work I will probably struggle with how to balance mothering with a demanding, unpredictable and fulfilling job. For a time I was falling into that old socialisation of not looking after myself as much as I look after my family, resulting in feelings of scathing resentment against my bewildered partner. He had encouraged me from early on to take time out from him and our baby, but I had said ?I?m not ready?. It took a moment of desperate exhaustion before I realised that I must take responsibility for my own wellbeing. As other feminist mothers have written before me, I am then modeling for my son that I am worthy.

  1. If you have a partner, how does your partner feel about your feminist motherhood? What is the impact of your feminism on your partner?

My partner is both bemused and respectful of my feminist motherhood and my interest in domestic violence. He worries that I am upsetting myself and working too hard. He is also proud of my views and my commitment; he often repeats views I have expressed, and we have conversations that challenge us both and bring us closer. He supports and facilitates my approach to mothering. The main thing that attracted me to him was that I could see he was respectful of women. I was confident that I would be safe with him, and that our children would be safe with him, even if we were ever to separate. The impact of my feminism on him is that he is challenged every day and he is required to step up. Sometimes he struggles with the reality of the oppression of women in our society. I think he would rather it weren?t the case but he realises it is. He is better than me at using humour to cope.

  1. If you?re an attachment parenting mother, what challenges if any does this pose for your feminism and how have you resolved them?

I did not realise that I am an attachment parenting mother until I started reading bluemilk. If I go by the guidelines of Attachment Parenting Australia, then yes, I am an attachment parenting mother.? But if I go by the standards of other more extreme attachment parents, such as ?Uma? who made her views known on bluemilk last year, then I don?t come up to scratch.

I came to attachment parenting through gut instinct, through advice from public hospital midwives, and by reading different material, but I didn?t realise it was called this. When pregnant I read Sarah Buckley?s ?Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering?, which I loved. I don?t feel there is a huge divide between attachment parenting as promoted by APA and my feminism, but I do wonder how attachment parenting (especially the more fundamentalist approaches) addresses the issue of domestic violence. Also, in all the comments responding to bluemilk?s post, I was a little surprised that there didn?t appear to be any mention of how the current situation in the Family Court of Australia is in direct opposition to attachment parenting.

Domestic violence against women with children usually includes a sustained and systematic undermining by the perpetrator of a mother?s parenting and her bond with her children. Women?s ability to parent is seriously impeded in this situation, which could interfere with the practice of attachment parenting, or conversely, could find them forced into a situation of isolation in the guise of attachment parenting (also referred to by bluemilk). Should a woman with children leave an abusive partner and the issue of contact with the children proceed to legal action, the current situation in the Family Court of Australia is such that she could find herself bound by a court order to allow her abusive ex-partner to see the children. Besides posing a great risk to the children and allowing for further abuse and control of the mother by the perpetrator via the children, such an arrangement would not allow for attachment parenting in it?s purest form. This would pose a huge challenge for a mother attempting to practice attachment parenting, and it would be entirely beyond her control. Examples of this include cases where breastfeeding mothers were forced to wean their babies in order to comply with court orders.

This situation in the Family Court came about after powerful right-wing conservative ?men?s rights? groups successfully lobbied the Howard government, which then brought in the 2006 amendments to the Family Law Act. These amendments resulted in the right of fathers to have contact with their children taking precedence over the right to safety of children and mothers. Thankfully, due to the tireless work of feminists in the domestic violence sector and others elsewhere, a Bill to make changes to the Act has passed the Senate and should be in place later in the year. This will go some way towards improving the situation but will not solve all the deeply entrenched problems of the patriarchal court system and domestic violence in general. In this respect attachment parenting definitely needs feminism.

10. Do you feel feminism has failed mothers and if so how? Personally, what do you think?feminism has given mothers?

I do not think that feminism has failed mothers in that it is the very thing that led to the domestic violence movement over the past 30 to 40 years. This brought domestic violence out of the private and into the public sphere, with the result that society could no longer ignore it to such an extent. With this movement came legislative and policy reforms that have improved somewhat the responses to domestic violence and the options available to women experiencing it. Current best practice in mainstream domestic violence policy is based on feminist perspectives of DV being a product of patriarchy. There is of course still much to be done. Feminism is seen to have let mothers down where they don?t fit into the dominant discourse of white privilege, and responses for mothers who are culturally and linguistically diverse, living with a disability, older, trans, same-sex and experiencing domestic violence definitely need to improve.

Here are some readings that influence my feminism, my mothering, my work and my life?

Here?s How to Participate:

The event occurs once a week, starting Thursdays at 8:00 PM my time and running until the following Monday at midnight.

  1. Simply link up a recipe you made (and posted about) that contains health-supporting ingredients (see list below). You may link up older posts from your archives as long as they contain a link to this post. Please do not link more than once to the same page from your blog.
  2. Please link the post with your recipe, NOT your blog?s home page or another event page. The post must contain a recipe.
  3. You may submit more than one recipe, but please follow the guidelines for each one individually. ONLY ONE THUMBNAIL FROM EACH BLOG POST, PLEASE. If your post contains two suitable recipes, link up once and people will still see all your fabulous recipes when they click on the linky. :)
  4. Please be sure to mention this event and include a link back to this post so that others can find all the recipes posted!
  5. Feel free to use the blog badge, above (or see the left sidebar of this page?if you need the html code, let me know and I?ll send it to you). Many thanks to Adrienne of Whole New Mom for setting up the badge code for me!

What your recipe CAN contain:

  • Any good-for-you, whole foods, especially those with antioxidant properties or ?functional foods? (ie, offering naturally medicinal or health-promoting qualities?such as garlic, coconut oil, all vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.)?but any fresh, real food is welcome!
  • Natural sweeteners (coconut sugar, agave, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, stevia, Sucanat, rapadura, coconut nectar, yacon syrup, etc.)
  • Vegan ingredients (even if you?re not vegan, OF COURSE you can still play along! You?ll be surprised at how many foods are naturally vegan; and if not, there are many subs you can use for eggs, milk or butter?include vegan options and we?re good to go!).
  • Note that this is NOT AN ACD-ONLY EVENT. Any real food ingredients that are sugar-free and vegan are more than welcome?so use that maple syrup, those mushrooms, that nutritional yeast, miso, etc! I?m just looking for healthy, whole foods recipes. :)

What your recipe cannot contain:

  • White flour, white sugar, or any highly refined, highly processed ingredients (note that regular brown sugar is actually refined!);
  • Anything almost entirely artificial (ie, most boxed mixes, fast food, faux ?cheese,? faux ?meat,? or margarine, unnaturally colored cereals or other foods, etc.);
  • Animal products (meat, chicken, fish or seafood, or their by-products, gelatin, eggs, dairy, butter or honey).

?Hey! Why was my entry removed??

I will reluctantly remove any links that don?t comply. I apologize, but I will no longer be able to leave a comment telling you that I?ve removed a non-compliant link.

  • The most common reason entries are removed is because they don?t adhere to the guidelines: either they don?t contain a link back to this post, they contain ingredients that aren?t listed here, they link to another blog event, or they contain neither a recipe nor anything directly related to food preparation. If you render a recipe vegan-friendly by adding a vegan option to your ingredients, your post will be good to go! For older posts, you?re welcome to re-post them during the week of the event, or choose a newer recipe.
  • Another reason posts are removed is because the link leads to an advertisement or a business blog. Please do NOT link up posts that are merely referrals to a different post or the home page for another blog event.
  • I hate to have to remove links! PLEASE read the guidelines before posting!

And n0w. . . what have you been cooking up lately? Please share!

Never miss a recipe?or a comment from The Girls! Click here to subscribe to Diet, Dessert and Dogs via email. (?We love subscribers, Mum. . . almost as much as treats!?)

Seniors World Chronicle: USA: 'All About Family': Living In ...

CONCORD , NEW HAMPSHIRE / New Hampshire New / Family / May 14, 2012
The emotional and financial costs of caregiving have been a central theme in?Morning Edition's special series called?"Family Matters: The Money Squeeze."?It profiles?three families?struggling with the complexities of living in multigenerational households and facing difficult financial decisions: how to afford care for an elderly relative while paying for college and saving for retirement. "There's all these life milestones that we go through and caregiving is one of them. Yet it's often overlooked," says Denise Brown, who runs?Caregiving.com, a online community for caregivers. According to AARP, nearly 44 million Americans are taking care of an older family member at any given time. And, as the nation's baby boomers age, this number will only increase. In fact, as the population ages, the average worker will be a caregiver, according to Cheryl Matheis, senior vice president for policy at AARP.?She recently spoke?with?Morning Edition?host Steve Inskeep.

Currently, the average caregiver is female, 49 years old and working, and she spends roughly 20 hours a week on caregiving duties. And, the impact on the caregiver's life can be significant.

"[Caregivers] lose on average $325,000 in lifetime income in lost wages, lost social security, and lost pensions," Matheis says.

The National Alliance for Caregiving found nearly 70 percent of working caregivers reduced their work hours, took a leave of absence or chose early retirement due to their caregiving duties. According to a Pfizer-ReACT/Gallup poll, when caregivers did come to work, they were less productive than non-caregivers.

Many of our listeners wrote in about their own caregiving experiences.

Melissa Fitzpatrick wrote: "Thank you so much for this series! It really speaks to me. My mother-in-law, who has moderate dementia, moved in with us 1 1/2 years ago (shortly after I went through a particularly harrowing caregiving stint with my own mother when she was going through chemotherapy). Trying to figure out how to provide my mother-in-law with the care she needs, while also balancing taking care of my kindergartner and working has been tough."

Rebecca Hansbrough wrote: "These individuals family profiles strike a cautionary tale, not just for the senior members but for the middle aged children as well. One of the little spoken and ugly secrets is the fact that many of us will require long term care at some point in our lives and Medicaid won't cut it... I applaud these families for their ability to adjust in order to provide their loved ones with a caring and supportive environment."

Hank Scott wrote: "For me, it is a joy and a form of self reward to care for my elders, see to it there is a roof over their heads, food in the [fridge]. All the things they did for me as a young one. I have to admit without some aid from the government in the form of Social Security and Medicaid/Medicare, it would be almost impossible for me. So I not only appreciate the safety net, but willingly participate in it. The only sad part is the cost of all things has risen so much it makes it harder every year."

Ginger Hilgenberg wrote: "I am a caregiver for my mom who is 92 and still lives on her own. When she was in her seventies, she cared for her aunt... Now it is my turn to help, but it is very difficult some days. I am 52 and have one son in college, one still in high school. My husband is supporting us all as I am a stay-at-home mom. It's all about family, not politics, or money. Do the best with what you have. Isn't that what our mothers taught us as children?"

STRATEGIC UPDATE AND MAIN EVENTS

  • VimpelCom's subsidiary OTH submitted formal notice of arbitration against Algerian Government
  • Significant part of 2012 debt maturities refinanced by bonds issued in March and April
  • Sale of controlling interest in GTEL Mobile Vietnam
  • Final dividend to be paid before June 30th 2012 ?
  • Maximo Ibarra appointed to lead Italy Business

VimpelCom continued its progress in the first quarter against its strategic priorities as defined by the Company's Value Agenda for 2012-2014, which was presented on November 15, 2011.

In March, the Company announced that an Algerian Court of first instance handed down a judgment against Orascom Telecom Algerie ("OTA") and a member of OTA's senior executive team. The judgment relates to a previously disclosed claim brought in 2010 by the Algerian authorities alleging breaches of foreign exchange regulations. The judgment consists of fines of 99 billion Algerian Dinar (approximately USD 1.3 billion) and a criminal sentence against a member of OTA's senior executive team. OTA has appealed and accordingly the judgment was provisionally suspended.

In April, VimpelCom's subsidiary Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. ("OTH"), submitted a formal Notice of Arbitration against the government of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. The arbitration is in respect of actions taken by the Algerian government against Orascom Telecom Algerie ("OTA") and will be conducted in an international forum. OTA is 96.8% owned by OTH, which, in turn, is 51.9% owned by VimpelCom. VimpelCom continues to be open to finding an amicable resolution with the Algerian government that is mutually beneficial to both parties.

In March the Company issued non-convertible interest-bearing Russian Ruble-denominated bonds in an aggregate principal amount of RUB 35 billion (USD 1.2 billion) with a 10 year maturity and an 8.85% coupon. The proceeds of the offerings will be used for OJSC VimpelCom's general corporate purposes and refinancing of existing debt.

In early April, WIND prepaid its term loan A maturities for 2012 and 2013 for an amount of EUR 500 million. Concurrently, its subsidiary WAF SA issued a EUR?500?million equivalent tap of Senior Secured Notes due 2018 (EUR tranche is at 7.375% and the USD tranche is at 7.25%). The proceeds of the offering were used, in part, to repay EUR 250 million of indebtedness related to an outstanding bridge loan entered into in October 2011 in relation to the LTE spectrum purchase.

On April 23, 2012, VimpelCom announced the sale of its controlling 49% interest in GTEL Mobile in Vietnam. The Company continues its strategic portfolio analysis, focused on allocating capital to those markets where the Company sees the best opportunities to generate shareholder value.

The shareholders of OTH in their meeting held on May?3,?2012 approved OTH entering into a five-year USD?2.5?billion uncommitted Credit Facility Agreement with VimpelCom Amsterdam B.V. Advances under this Facility, which will be drawn from time to time based on the business development needs of OTH agreed upon with VimpelCom, will bear an interest rate of 12.5% and accrued interest will be paid in kind (payable by automatic addition to the principal balance).

In April, VimpelCom and its subsidiary VimpelCom Holdings B.V., which together own 100% of the Group's Russian subsidiary OJSC VimpelCom, were named as third parties in a claim brought by the Russian Federal Anti-Monopoly Service ("FAS") in a Moscow Arbitration Court against two of VimpelCom's strategic shareholders, Telenor East Holding II AS ("Telenor") and Weather Investments II S.a.r.l. ("Weather II"). The FAS claim alleges that Telenor's February 15, 2012 purchase of 234 million VimpelCom preferred shares from Weather II violated relevant Russian law and seeks to, among other things, invalidate the purchase.? In connection with this claim, FAS obtained from the Moscow court an order for interim relief which prohibits VimpelCom and VimpelCom Holdings from voting their shares in OJSC VimpelCom at shareholder meetings of OJSC VimpelCom, to change the OJSC VimpelCom Board of Directors and approve major transactions and interested party transactions, as such terms are defined under Russian law. The order does not prohibit VimpelCom and VimpelCom Holdings from exercising their other rights as shareholders of OJSC VimpelCom, including, among other things, rights to approve OJSC VimpelCom's annual accounts, to appoint OJSC VimpelCom's external auditor, to approve dividend payments by OJSC VimpelCom and to re-elect the current OJSC VimpelCom Board members.? According to the order, the first hearing on the merits of the FAS claim is scheduled for October 17, 2012.

The payment of the previously announced final dividend of USD 0.35 per American depositary share ("ADS") in relation to its 2011 results will be paid before June 30, 2012.

Finally, VimpelCom announced the appointment of Maximo Ibarra as CEO of WIND Telecomunicazioni in Italy effective May 11, 2012. Mr. Ibarra will focus on the further development of the Company's operations in Italy, aligned with VimpelCom's Value Agenda.

?VIMPELCOM GROUP ? FINANCIAL AND OPERATING RESULTS 1Q12

  • Organic Revenue growth of 6% YoY; Revenues of USD 5.6 billion
  • Organic EBITDA growth of 5% YoY; EBITDA of USD 2.3 billion
  • Total mobile subscriber base increased 12% YoY to 209 million
  • Net cash from operating activities was USD 1.6 billion
  • CAPEX of USD 0.6 billion, with a CAPEX / Revenues of 11%
  • Net debt / LTM EBITDA was 2.5x at the end of the first quarter

OPERATING PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW

The total mobile subscriber base increased 12% YoY to 209?million at the end of the first quarter. The largest absolute contribution came from accelerated growth in subscribers in the Africa & Asia Business Unit. The Company also achieved strong growth in fixed and mobile broadband subscribers in Russia, Italy and Ukraine.

In line with the strategy of targeting profitable growth and resetting the overall commercial model to achieve this goal, VimpelCom in Russia engaged in more targeted sales activities in the first quarter of 2012. As a result, overall subscribers declined in the first quarter 2012 compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, which benefited from extensive pre-holiday sales. Mobile broadband subscribers in Russia increased 12% YoY to 2.6 million, while the Fixed broadband subscriber base reached over 2 million, up 42% YoY. Overall, organic revenue growth in Russia was strong at 11% YoY.

The Company's Italian business continued to outperform the broader Italian telecom market in the first quarter despite the ongoing weak macroeconomic environment and unfavorable regulatory developments. VimpelCom strengthened its market position in Italy in both mobile and fixed-line, increasing its revenue share in both segments. The fixed broadband subscriber base increased 9% YoY to more than 2.2 million, with an increase in Fixed broadband revenues of 9% YoY, while Mobile internet revenues increased 40% YoY.??????

In the Africa & Asia Business Unit, the Company achieved strong growth in its subscriber base across all countries of operation, exceeding 86 million in total. Solid performance across the main operations led to organic revenue growth of 9% YoY. In particular Pakistan and Bangladesh contributed strongly. Reported total operating revenues increased by 4% YoY, adversely impacted by local currency devaluation against the USD in the main operating countries of Algeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The Ukraine Business Unit continued to deliver solid revenue growth in mobile and fixed data revenues and almost doubled its Fixed broadband subscribers. Mobile revenues were up 2% YoY driven by growth of voice and data traffic as a result of the strategy of transition to bundles. Fixed-line revenues increased by 16% YoY, mainly due to an 82% increase in fixed residential broadband revenues.

The CIS Business Unit delivered strong revenue growth and was able to maintain high quality subscriber growth despite a sharpening competitive environment also affected by certain governmental measures in key markets.

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW

PRO FORMA 1Q12

Total operating revenues in the first quarter 2012 increased by 3% YoY, with a strong performance across most business units. Overall organic revenue growth was 6%.

EBITDA increased 1% YoY, impacted by unfavorable currency movements. Excluding these forex effects, EBITDA increased 5% compared to the same period last year. Strong organic EBITDA growth was seen in the markets of the business units of Russia and Africa & Asia, up 9% and 12% respectively, while the performance in CIS showed a 2% increase YoY. Overall growth was partly offset by the YoY organic EBITDA decline in Ukraine and Italy.

EBIT, which increased by 12% YoY, was positively affected, as reported previously, by the declining amortization pattern applied to intangible assets associated with customer relationships as part of the Wind Telecom acquisition where amortization of later periods is lower than amortization in the year of acquisition.

Profit before tax was negatively impacted by the lower foreign exchange gain in 1Q12 compared to 1Q11,?lower net gain realized in 1Q12 from investments in associated entities, mainly related to our investment in Euroset and fair value changes of embedded derivatives. In 1Q11 the foreign exchange gain was USD 168 million, while in 1Q12 the gain only amounted to USD 63 million, mainly due to the lower USD exposure in Russia.

Net income decreased by 29% YoY as a result of the increase in income tax expense of USD 54 million and USD?48 million change in profit for the period attributable to non-controlling interest, mainly resulting from a stronger performance in Orascom Telecom Holding.

CAPEX was USD 0.6 billion, excluding licenses, with investments in the further roll out of the mobile networks in Russia, Bangladesh and the CIS. In Italy, we continued to invest in the roll-out of HSDPA and in backbone capacity to support the growth in data.

ACTUAL 1Q12

On an actual basis, revenues more than doubled YoY and EBITDA and EBIT increased by 92% and 62% YoY respectively as a result of the combination with Wind Telecom in April 2011.

Profit before tax decreased by 9% YoY due to additional? finance costs as a result of the Wind Telecom acquisition; net losses from associated entities- mainly due to lower profits from Euroset and losses from the investment in Canada; as well as lower gains from foreign exchange rates movements, mainly attributable to the lower USD exposure in Russia.

The increase in the effective income tax rate, driven by higher non-deductible expenses and non-recognized losses in Wind Telecom entities as well as the effect of a reversal of tax provisions in Russia in 1Q11, has led to a decrease in net income of 36% to USD?318 million.

Total assets increased by 4% to USD 56.1 billion, primarily as a result of investments in the business, external financing and the appreciation of RUB and EUR against USD offset by the transfer of the spin-off assets to Weather II. Gross debt increased in the quarter from USD 26.9 billion to USD?28.6?billion, mainly due to the issuance of Ruble bonds for RUB 35 billion (approximately USD 1.2 billion) and FX movements. Net debt decreased to USD 24.3 billion, leading to a net debt to LTM EBITDA of 2.5x on a pro forma basis at the end of the first quarter.

Net cash from operating activities at the Group level was positively impacted by higher EBITDA, partially offset by higher interest and tax payments. Net cash used in investing activities was mainly impacted by a substantial movement from cash to deposits in 2011, partially offset by the higher investments in property, equipment and intangible assets in 2012 resulting from the consolidation of Wind Telecom.

Net cash from financing activities in 1Q12 was mainly the result of obtaining external financing (issuance of Ruble bonds), primarily in anticipation for repayment of maturing debt as scheduled.

The Russian Business Unit delivered double-digit revenue growth and a substantial improvement?in?EBITDA, reversing the EBITDA trend seen last year. The EBITDA margin in 1Q12 reached 41.3%, improving over the FY11 margin of 40.1%.

Mobile data continues to be one of the fastest growing revenue streams for VimpelCom in Russia. The Company continued to promote mobile data services to a wider audience, creating attractive bundled offerings and innovative tariffs with the main focus on small and medium screens. The total revenue growth of 11% YoY was accounted for by a 39% increase in mobile data growth.

In line with the strategy of targeting profitable growth and resetting the overall commercial model to achieve this goal, VimpelCom engaged in more targeted sales activities in the first quarter of 2012. As a result, overall subscribers declined in the first quarter 2012 compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, which also benefited from extensive pre-holiday sales, but was still 5% above 1Q11 level.

At the end of 2011, the Company launched a Customer Experience program focused on enhancing the Beeline brand and improving customer loyalty. Initiatives in this program are focused on improving the quality of services and increasing pricing transparency. As a result of these initiatives, in 1Q12 the Company received one of the highest ratings in the TRI*M Index, which is an indicator of increasing customer satisfaction across our products and services. This customer satisfaction indicator increased by approximately 7% YoY. Going forward, the Company will continue with the Customer Experience program in order to consistently improve the level of customer satisfaction with all Beeline brand products and services.

To optimize the expenses related to subscriber acquisition costs and to lower churn rates, the Company has also implemented a new dealer commission structure based on revenue sharing instead of upfront payments.

In 1Q12, the Russian Business Unit launched a number of initiatives aimed at increasing productivity through organizational structure optimization and through improving business process efficiency.
